Last year our second graders planted a butterfly garden with native plants that will feed and attract butterflies to our garden. These plants are perennial meaning that they will come back year after year. They have outgrown their garden box and so a new bed has been made for them. Our second graders this year, will continue to weed and water these pollinators in addition to taking care of their garden box.

By the end of this week, all of our fall harvest will be planted. Thanks to our great PTO volunteer Mrs. Joice for helping with this task. We are all working hard to water the garden daily, pull weeds, and give the garden TLC to make sure our plants are surviving the heat. Hopefully cooler weather will come soon.
Where were you in 1996? The students of Medlock Bridge were winning Georgia Clean and Beautiful State Awards with their gardening and tree planting activities. Check out the photos of the first garden that grew here and the people who made that garden happen. 20 years later our students are excited to be growing again! And Corn and Beans and Squash and sunflowers and perennials! Our Garden has grown this winter and thanks to the MBES PTO we're adding some hardscape to the area to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Medlock Bridge Elementary School. Check out the progress that we've made! Our grade levels, with support from some great garden parents, are planting food, flowers and inspiration this spring. Pre K- our Pre K herb garden is growing strong. They even have some carrots and blueberries that will be ready to eat soon. 2nd grade is working on a starter pollinator garden using plants that are native to our area and guaranteed to attract butterflies. 4th grade is inter- planting the three sisters (corn, beans and squash) in the same way Native Americans do with each plant supporting the growth of the other. http://www.almanac.com/content/companion-planting-three-sisters 5th grade is planting a victory garden similar to gardens planted to support the war effort during WWII. http://amhistory.si.edu/house/yourvisit/victorygarden.asp In the library we are planning to observe and record data on some caterpillars as they transform into butterflies. These amazing creatures will be released into the pollinator garden when they emerge from their cocoons. We've also had a generous offer from some former girl scouts to build a bat house for our campus. Did you know that a single bat can eat between 6,000-8,000 insects a night. They love to eat mosquitoes! Inviting them into our community is a natural way to combat pest insects. http://www.motherearthnews.com/nature-and-environment/control-insects-bat-habitat.aspx Our other grade levels are currently working on their plans so stay tuned! |
