Victory gardens were gardens that the government asked people to plant in their yards or window boxes. They were used during WWII to help prevent a food shortage.
These gardens helped make sure that soldiers all over the world had enough food. Victory gardens also helped people stretch their ration coupons, which were the amount of certain foods they could buy, by providing food for their families. Since food was grown in peoples communities, trucks that were usually used to transport food could be used to transport soldiers and weapons. There were many different foods grown in the gardens. Some examples are planted here in our 5th Grade Victory Garden: tomatoes, okra, peppers, onions, and cucumbers. Food grown in the gardens that people didn't need then were canned and used during the winter months to extend their harvest. Many schools planted Victory gardens on their school grounds and used what they grew for their school lunches. THIS IS THE 5TH GRADE VICTORY GARDEN!
